On the Move at last

It is very early in the morning of Annwn's first blog entry. Just a few chores to complete - fill up water tanks, remove boom tent, tie down dinghy, stow air conditioner - oh yes! have another cup of tea. Then we are off at last, heading to Singapore to catch up with family, cruising buddies and visiting friends. After too much time on the hard, it will be great to be on the move again. Perhaps Hughie will send a gentle breeze to allow us to remember how to sail!

Terengganu, Redang and Perhentian Islands

Terengganu is a bustling city where you can find most anything. We berthed in the marina and could dinghy across the river to Chinatown. Hired a car and did a day run to Thai border to renew our visas - interesting process involving four queues and a bridge. Queue to check out of Malaysia, walk across [...]

Chukai to Kuala Terengannu

After two days in the outer Harbour at Kemamam, we moved up river to anchor off the town of Banda Cukai. The town is good for food and diesel supplies, and has plenty of small restaurants to visit. The highlight was the local signature dish of Stuffed Crab, and a lunch with Captain Waung (friend of a [...]

Chukai

Headed north from Tioman with the intention of stopping at Pulau Valella, which turned out to be a pimple on the water and surrounded by fishing nets. So an overnighter was the go. All good until one of Hughie's best and most spectacular thunderstorms erupted. So a wet, cold, sleepless and tiring trip [...]

Tioman Island, Malaysia

Well we have managed to be here for three weeks. Sailed in with John and Gail and spent time in Tekek and at Monkey Bay. Good snorkeling and an interesting deserted restaurant type building on our very own beach.

Senibong Cove to Tioman Island

Motoring through Johor Straits - an eye opener to see huge shipping industry and both Singapore and Malaysia busily reclaiming land. Is there a rule as to how close you can go to the next country across the water?

Pangkor to Senibong

17 May 2016 | Senibong Cove Marina, East Johor, Malaysia
After far too long on the hard, this was an "interesting" six day odyssey for both Annwn and her crew.
Day 1 - to Pulau Angsa - choppy seas not good for finding sea legs; depth sounder with random numbers not good for finding anchorage depths. Oops!
Day 2 - to Port Klang South - smoother seas, GPS and charts for depth, and a red wine to go with the sunset. Even had a sail!
Day 3 - to random light blue area of the coast - all good until engine oil light came on. No oil!?! Where did it go? Crept to anchor and Wal went off with two local fishermen, who gave him a motor bike ride to get oil. Deduction - oil cooler collapse. Solution - realign hoses to cut cooler out of system. That worked so cross fingers for rest of trip.
Day 4 - to Tanjung Tohor (ish) - some motoring, some sailing - days seem to be longer when you are tired.
Day 5 - to Pulau Pisang - not an open roadstead, an actual island! Surely this will be a flat night sleep. No! The obligatory afternoon storm put us on a lee shore and left the seas rolly.
Day 6 - to East Johor - plan to follow inshore traffic lane from west to east and dodge ships on the way. Would have been easier without the Singapore Coast Patrol (three lots) who all wanted to know who, what, where and we discovered that the VHF receives but does not transmit. After Raffles Lighthouse there was a constant Singapore Police boat presence, even through the whiteout thunderstorm, until we passed the port limit buoy and anchored at East Johor.
Day 7 - caught the morning tide up the Santi River to Senibong Cove. Settled by midday. Nap time! Bus to Singapore tomorrow.
