May 27th Bermuda to Azores
14 December 2011
After 10 days at sea we are starting to look forward to landfall which should be in about 3 or 4 days. There has been plenty of wildlife as there are always birds within a few miles of Argo and the dolphins usually visit us in the early morning and again in the late afternnon. These dolphins are all about business though. They angle toward us and shadow the boat for a few minutes but quickly move off. I suspect they are checking out the ecosystem that is probably following us.
We have encountered a few other sailboats along the way and had a nice chat with those aboard Lotus, a UK yacht. There have been numerous large ships passing close-by but the AIS system has kept us clear. We usually hail these ships and request weather information. This helps to insure that they have picked us up on their radar.
The biggest piece of excitment was during Pat and Louie's night watch when a large flamming object rocketed across the sky and plunged into the ocean a few miles behind us. I assume this was a piece of space junk. The noise the ladies made was quite something and I lost a few years off my life with that but didn't make it into the cockpit to view the fireball.
