Mayo/Mo/Mahon

06 August 2015 | Cala Covas
Myra Rowling
Mayo/Mo/Mahon (depending on whether you are Catalonian or Spanish) is an enormous fortified harbour, with watch towers and cannon and barracks prominently displayed on the high surrounding cliffs. The novelty here was that the marina staff moored us on a floating pontoon, rather than at a dock. The pontoon had water, electricity, a rather exposed outdoor shower, and staff who came and went regularly collecting rubbish and delivering free morning baguettes. The pontoon was however close to the waterfront, so a short dinghy ride and a hike up steep steps had us in Old Town quickly enough.

The town was attractive, particularly at night when tasteful lighting and cobble stoned roads and pavements made wandering around at midnight very easy. Again we did the cooler option of the round-town bus ride with the most attractive young female bus driver ever. We went to an organ recital in the Santa Maria church, begun in 1287 on the site of a mosque after the defeat of the Moors by Alfonso III. It now features Baroque decoration and an amazing Rococo altarpiece. The organ was built in 1806 and brought to the island with the assistance of the British. It is described as "mighty" with four keyboards and 3,120 pipes. Lunch was in a cool shaded street restaurant, of course with sangria, which Bill has now started to make for us girls when we are on the boat - he spoils us!

In the evening, we went to hear a concert by a Portuguese jazz singer, Sofia Robeiro, held in the Teatre Principal, Spain's first opera house, opened in 1829. It was often chosen by the big Spanish opera companies to premiere their Spanish tours. Sofia was brilliant, as were her three accompanying musicians. We are by now really in the Spanish way, emerging from the theatre at 10.30pm to look for a meal in a restaurant. And I have promised not to mention that our departure for the performance was slightly delayed by one of our crew, in going-out kit, having a dinghy/water incident.

To finish our stay in Menorca, we anchored for snorkelling and swimming in Cala Covas, a sapphire blue inlet in the cliffs with prehistoric cave dwelling high up. A lovely farewell to the island
