Earth Moving in Rotorua
22 February 2011 | Rotorua, New Zealand
Sunny & Warm
We have been in Rotorua for 4 days now enjoying the damp sulphur breeze. Our camp site is only yards away from active steam vents and boiling lakes. The ground here has been shaking since we arrived and yesterday a big shaker came through at the time of the Christchurch quake.
We are sad to see such a beautiful city destroyed by quakes...they were still recovering from the 7.1 quake just 5 months ago. In many of the pictures of the destruction you can see scaffolding in the wreckage which was there during the rebuilding. Christchurch is one of our favorite cities in New Zealand and it was strange seeing the hotel that we stayed in collapsed. The down town Cathedral was so spectacular and now it is likely to be torn down due to damage.
I other news, S/V Quest and crew have been killed while sailing through pirate alley. We never met Quest, but many of our friends met them in Central America. We too plan to sail through the gulf and into the Red Sea and hope that the Somali pirates have been paved over by then. The 15 captured pirates need to face public gallows.
