On the road again...

30 January 2009 | Drowned Cay
Jan
Well the kids are gone and we had decided to spend one more day at the marina, despite the bugs, which I must say have been pretty bad even for me! With laundry done, refrigerator defrosted, cockpit cleaned, oil changed and windlass reinstalled and working BOTH WAYS... we were more than ready to head out. Saturday the 31st we left the marina, again with cloudy skies and drizzle. We headed for Drowned Cay which we were told is a great place to hold up in a Northern blow, which we were expecting! Only a 2 1/2 hour sail, the seas were pretty choppy, but the wind was in our favor and we were able to make 5.5 knots the whole way with only the main sail up! We decided to not go into the inlets of the island, as we feared more bugs, and had a very peaceful and calm anchorage with only 2 feet below the keel and protected from the NE wind and cold front that was expected that day. Hearing from Bill and Debra on "Snow Virgin" in the morning on the net, they were headed to Caye Caulker from near where we were anchored with good way points to get us thru the REALLY shallow water of "PORTO STUCK"! They name that passage for a reason we saw only 0.6 feet below the keel for most of that passage between 2 islands and even 0.3 ft (that's only 4 inches below our keel!) for a few moments as we exited the pass. It's a darn good thing we were following "Snow Virgin" since if we would have been alone, we would have taken hours, perhaps only doing 1 knot thru those shallow waters!
