Waterspouts on the Horizon

17 April 2011 | Fort Pierce
Nancy
Pulled anchor at Lake Worth around 7:45 am. Tricky exiting the inlet: there were many small boats, sail and power, going out plus a big freighter coming in the inlet, all at the same time. Lots of bumpy wake all around and not much maneuvering room. We did OK though (Ed has nerves of steel). After exiting the inlet we saw two water spouts on the horizon in the northeast. I took pictures but they didn't come out very well. Above is as they were shrinking. They both dissapated in about 10 minutes.

Light SW wind; engine on. Rolly polly waves, knocking our canned goods and dishes all around below. We tried to put the main up with the preventer but it still flopped around violently. Took it down so the sail wouldn't get damaged. So......we motor and we rock, rock, rock.

The Ft. Pierce inlet was a challenge; we had wind against current and lots of pleasure craft.

We checked out the anchorage near the Ft. Pierce Bridge on the north but it seemed too shallow for us, plus a bit crowded. So we went to our usual place near Causeway Island to anchor, even though it was low tide and we were concerned about getting in there from the ICW. We had not depth issues, even at low tide, and didn't see the sunken boat in the channel. Ed thinks they dredged and probably removed the boat.

Anchored at 4:00 pm in very windy conditions (18+). Put out 150 feet of chain in about 20 feet of water...plenty of room to swing.
