Put In Bay

Revisionist history or politically correct? You choose.
Picture was taken from the Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry monument, a national monument built in 1912 to commemorate the defeat of the British in the battle of Lake Erie. Now it is called the "Peace Memorial" to commemorate the 200 years of peace between the US and GB and Canada. Was that what they had in mind when they built it in 1912? Is that what the park building has in mind with the diorama of the battle ships and blow by blow of what happened in the battle?
Doesn't matter, a great vantage to view the Bass islands and others, just north of Sandusky, OH.
There are no safe anchorages in the area but there are 100 moorings in PIB., There is also a tender service to shore. The tender driver said the moorings were full on the weekend. We arrived on Monday from the Clinton River, Lake St Claire. There were only 4 boats in the moorings and Tuesday morning there was just the Uproar boat.
PIB seems like a mixture of Water St (Milwauikee) Bourbon St and Door County. They claim to have the longest bar in the world. We stepped in and it was a long bar but the live country band drove us back onto the street.
We had fun there and would recommend it as a stop.
Our second evening there, we went to the dock for fuel as the dock closed at 8:00 PM. Our intent was to leave early the next morning for points east. I told Lisa, "It is a nice night, let's do a night passage to Port Corboun, the entrance to the Welland Canal.
So we left after fueling and headed NE. The lake was choppier than I thought but still a nice ride. We sailed through the night but motored about 2/3 of the trip. Lisa saw the lights of Cleveland and I kept Sophie company in the forward cabin.
We raced through Lake Erie in 24 hours from PIB to the Welland Canal. Good thing I got the radar figured out. There was a lot of commercial traffic but we stayed north of the shipping lanes. Uproar can do a night passage!
Sorry these posts are a bit behind. More to come.
