We had an idea or I did that if while cruising we had to go under and clear the fouled rudder or prop. Or make some repair out in the middle of somewhere. A snorkle won't make it. So we (I) decide that we needed to get scuba Certified. We have now gotten the written tests, all pool dives and two open ocean dives out of the way. Two more ocean dives and one more thing off my list.
Sailing has been great lately some good wind and very calm seas. Very relaxing and helps in the teaching of Mary with the fundamentals. She is getting the hang of it. Almost know what line pull at the right time. Four years we maybe ready to go.

07/28/2009, Mission Bay / San Diego
We are prepping for the Catalina trip will be heading out soon. We got some other's to meet at Avalon but will head out alone which is always nice. Then head over to Cherry Cove after a day or two. This will be our first trip with a Bimini. The sun is pretty tough after 6-8 hrs. But we have a good dingy this year and should be a lot more mobile having a little more experience with this trip. We'll down load pictures after we get back. This trip is about 70 miles out of Mission Bay to Avalon. With a compass heading of 295 or so. Leave around 3-4 am and be there by four if wind and current behave. Always be ready for the worst but don't fear the best. Time to pull from the dock.

07/27/2009, San Diego Harbor/ Harbor Island Sail Club
Had a friend rent a 36 Catalina. As a fairly new boat this was a lot of fun to sail. With furling main and all the bells and whistles. Tacking out though the crowd was a chore but once clear and had the direct course we set our heading and headed south to the islands just south into Mexico. Always a fun trip and killed a good ten hours of fun sailing. Not a lot of motoring involved with this course and the prevailing winds out and back. Picture's to follow. We have to wait for the camera to come back from another trip. The 36 Catalina is a beauty. I'm not a big fan but I wouldn't turn down a trip with one of these. We got great speed from her for her size. I had a very good time. Thanks Capt. Bob.

07/20/2009, Off the Coast of San Dieg
Here is the race as we head down wind. Neck and neck all the way. We are currently getting ready for the annual Santa Catalina Island trip. Hopefully will have an update and some more pictures. We are the one in the fore ground in blue. We later over took them but still did not get much ground or ocean before the end.

07/07/2009, Anchored for three days at Mariners Cove
We had no sailing in mind. We were going to head to Mariners Cove at Mission Bay Jetty. Its across from South Mission Beach in Pacific Beach, CA. Beautiful location for relaxing, kayaking, Barbecuing and watching Fireworks July 3rd and 4th.
The weather was perfect. Sun would come out around 11 am or noon. We had time to ride bikes along the boardwalk that goes on for well over 10 miles. You can ride the ocean side or Bay side with restaurants along the whole route. Great bay to stop and relax on any cruise and its free. Just free for a few days don't plan on staying forever.
It was calm and quiet if you lucked out not to be next to the party boat. But all was cool and we had a great time. With friends from shore coming by at all different times of the day and night. We will come back but not with too much Sailor Jerry rum. That hurt.
We will stopping here quite often when not at Glorietta Bay in the San Diego Harbor at Coronado Island.

07/06/2009, Off the coast of San Diego / Pacific Beach
We have waited for this day for over a month now. The test for the new boat has come finally. We had hoped that she would be fast but still unsure of our ability to trim Negotiator to it's full strength. We had a good crew with Dave. Baron, Sean my son, Mary, Russ and then we added Don and Carol. They shouldn't sit on the dock. So with a full boat we headed out. We had sails up and the wind felt good. Baron had his handy Dandy wind meter. He called out 10.5 and climbing.
As we timed the start we had a perfect heading on the line. But wait I was pulling to hard, had to ease up some to hold behind the line. Then it happened. Pulled to hard into the wind and lost all wind. We came to a dead stop and off went the horn. Damn we now were heading the wrong direction. Dave says. "I think the race is suppose to go that direction". As he pointed north and I was looking south. I had no choice but to go down wind to get enough speed to come about. Then it was going to be a fight all the way. We then got as hard into the wind as we could and jammed to 7 knots. We we're to far out at this time best we could do is to save some face and pass who we could.
We took 11th of 17 to 20 boats. Oh well. Could not catch our neighbor with the 30 Catalina. I would now have to hear about it all year. Next Year. But you know it was still a good day of sailing. And the boat is great if we can just learn how to sail her.
