Nuts and Bolts

24 February 2010 | Guam
bj
Its been awhile since I wrote about nuts and bolts and fed you geeks with some boat facts.
I will start with breakdowns first.

Alternator/regulator on port engine needs repair
Bearings in Profurler genoa-have lasted 20 years so thats pretty good going now stuffed-replaced and rigging checked
Starboard engine battery -dead
House batteries seem sad may need to be replaced in Guam
Broken internal fan-some TLC and its fixed
Button for electric furling winch-something wrong with electrics we cant find circuit breaker-more research required
Laptop stuffed-thankfully not boat PC just the very expensive top of the range lenovo -the invertor/generator fried it.Lesson -do not run PC's when generator is on -ever.
Generator salt water cooling pump stuffed we have fixed with new pump casing and new impeller and much praying-this is still mirrors and strings but working after much head scratching so whos complaining!
All window covers have shredded themselves so will be replaced in Guam-they lasted 9 months more than expected
Bean bag covers have disintegrated -need replacing -sun takes it toll here. You get what you pay for in this world.
DVD and boat stereo fried by generator so we bought new DVD in PNG and use IPOD for stereo instead-no boat speakers-oh well.
Broken traveller-enroute Woleai Atoll-just old shackle broke-now fixed and new main system installed.we are now running dual traveller, main sheet and 2 permanent preventors so back of the boom looks like spagetti grafetti but its strong and lots of fail safes.
Obliterated runner block enroute Guam-just old now replaced, all the big blocks will probably start to crap out soon so we will replace in Guam-all replaced
HF hand held batteries need replacing
The skiper is trying to replace 1st mate but still looking....

At this juncture I feel compelled to rave abit about our amazing skipper. To sail the big ocean blue you grow into your role and he has grown into his.You have to fix everything that breaks and so far all the broken things except those that need replacing have been fixed by him...so thanks skipper. He is grumpy though most of the time but thats what happens when you are a skipper hey !
