So long Port Huron

I have finished two of the three Great Lakes. Most of today was spent on the St Clair river with the current. At one point I was seeing 8.8 knots.
Going under the bridge into the river was scary. In the Lake Huron ports, folks would talk about hugging the Canadian side of the channel. That was not an option as a freighter was coming the other way. After I passed under the bridge, all hell broke loose. It was like being in a wash bucket with steep 6 foot waves spaced close together. They stopped your forward progress so the boat would end up climbing each wave - bow pointing skyward as if you were climbing the steep ascent of a roller coaster. It was scary. I understood why earlier in the day a boat was overturned there and people were in the water.
I tried to anchor at Gull Island. The anchorage shown on the chart was small and occupied by two power boats. As I tried to scout around, I stopped looking at the chart and depth sounder. I throttled down the engine and suddenly the boat lurched to a stop. Grounded. It was very weedy, so I was never hard aground and was able to back off. After clearing the weeds from the prop, I was good to go. I found a marina for the night about an hour away.
They are over nighting a new autopilot to me and I should be able to install it Wednesday.
