Rain shortened trip to Fairport
22 August 2017 | Fairport, NY
2 locks -50 ft. Rainy
Pat left at six this morning. It is always hard on me when she goes. The taxi had some trouble finding us, and her experience trying to catch her connecting flight out of Philadelphia was terrible, but she did just barely make it on the plane and got home safely.
Fairport is sometimes called the Jewel of the Erie. We weren't planning on stopping here - until the storms came around 2. Around dinner time there was a break in the action so we could eat at another Irish Pub and walk around the town. Now it is raining hard again as I write this. The boat is also a bit far off the dock because I cannot pull it in - it is somewhat grounded. But I think I can get off with no problem.
Tari is traveling on my boat to help me get through the locks. Roger and Ron are on Paradise Hunter. There are a number of logs in the canal. One hunk was in the middle and I did not see it. After the second loud thunk, Tari exclaimed, "We're grounded." I knew that wasn't true, or else the depth sounder was suddenly broken. When we looked behind us we didn't see anything. It was awhile before the log bobbed to the surface. And then something on the boat started beeping, like the low water alarm. So something was now wrong after hitting the log, but what? It turned out to be a weather alert from NOAA weather radio. Tornado warnings. Whew! No, not that there were tornado warnings - that nothing was wrong with the boat!
For navigation, I am using the Map app - the one you use in your car. After tomorrow I can go back to using normal marine charts.
