Starting up the Potomac River
08 October 2017 | Jutland Creek off the Potomac River
Cloudy, windy on the nose. Warm.
It was windy going into the anchorage last night and through the night - about 20 knots. It was sometimes bumpy with the tide going out at the bottom of the creek where we were anchored, so it was not a restful night. I learned I need to lock my rudder due to the current turning the rudder. I didn't think I needed to do that at anchor. With the rudder turned, the current was steering the boat off the wind a bit, so the anchor line was pinned to the side.
This morning I used a winch to pull up the anchor with the wind blowing. Plus running back and forth to put the engine in gear for a moment, then back to the bow to pull up the slack from the boat going forward, hopefully. Using the winch worked, but I can make some improvements to the process.
On the way out of the anchorage this morning, I stayed in deeper water to avoid crab pots. Not a very direct route, but it worked.
There is a Prohibited Area on the Chesapeake Bay marked on the chart with a big circle. There is a buoy on each side of the circle. Inside the circle no depths are given, since you aren't supposed to go in there. I never saw that before. It didn't seem militarily related.
Tonight we are anchored in a very quiet little channel. It is shown on the chart. There are many inlets like this all up and down the Chesapeake and Potomac River. I will try to replace the chart photo with a picture tomorrow. There is land close by on both sides, so it sounds like you are camping in the woods. But instead of being in a tent, you are on a boat.
