A walk in the ... graveyard
25 October 2017 | Beaufort, NC
Sunny and pleasant
Today was spent with Pete and Sue from Sasha. They are bringing their new-to-them boat back to Florida and were at many of the same places I was - like Rock Hall and the boat show. They went inside (ICW) to get here, but are going out in the ocean for their next leg.
This marina has some courtesy cars, so after lunch out, we ran our errands. First stop was refilling our propane tanks. I thought I had used a fair amount of propane running around with my brother at Sturgeon Bay and later at Beaver Island, but it turned out not really. The fill lasted mere seconds. Next was the grocery store, followed by a trip to ... no, not West Marine, Ace Hardware. Same idea, but cheaper.
We wanted to take the double decker bus tour around the town. The town's history goes back to the 1700's. As we walked up, the bus pulled away, and they only run twice a day. But the bus was coming back to the next corner as it made its way along its route, so we could stop the bus there and start our tour at that point. It was fun on the top deck, as long as we didn't forget to duck under the tree branches! After the tour, Pete wisely went back to work on the boat to prepare for its first ocean passage tomorrow. I stayed with Sue, who wanted to walk the graveyard (see how wise Pete was to go back to the boat). Actually, it was interesting and historical, helped along because they had an app for that. So we walked among the weathered tombstones searching for the next number on the tour (part of the fun) where we would listen to the audio giving the historical information about the person. It is an old graveyard dating back hundreds of years, hence its name, Old Burying Ground. Many graves were concrete or brick mounds, which was different.
Tomorrow the journey continues for both of us. My hatch covers arrive at 10, Sasha will leave in the morning (maybe for Charleston), and I will leave in the evening for Charleston, planning to arrive there Saturday morning.
