Harbor Island
03/31/2012, Northern Eleuthera

In order to get to Harbor Island from Spanish Wells it is highly recommended, if not just plain prudent, to hire a pilot (cost 90us) to navigate a series of reefs called "devils backbone". The name alone strikes fear in the minds of cruisers everywhere.
I decided not to bring UNABATED to Harbor Island if for no other reason than it was in the wrong direction of my travels.
Instead, I took the 40 minute ride on the fast ferry.
Harbor Island is billed as the up scale Bahamas for the rich and famous. I saw no rich and no famous. It is certainly not the St. Barts of the Bahamas. A couple of nice marinas with some large yachts...... I, along with friends from SYMPHONY rented a golf cart and toured the island. There are hundreds and hundreds of golf carts. It seems that the biggest industry on the island besides tourism is the rental and repair of golf carts.

One of the big draws to Harbor Island is the claim of PINK beaches.
If you squint really hard while looking into the sun with a handful of wet sand, there is a small amount of crushed red coral. It does appear to be pink.

After 4 hours I was ready to leave and head back to Spanish Wells.
