Wooden Boat Festival in Tasmania

21 February 2017
After the ridiculous hot weather in New South Wales and Queensland, our visit to Tasmania was very enjoyable. It felt like air conditioning and wearing jackets and boots was a novelty. Bill and I love Tasmania. We lived in a fishing shack in the early 80s with our toddler daughter, working enough to survive and Bill catching flat head in a sailing dinghy across the road. I also met special friends Jude and Ned at playgroup. We are still good friends to this day, with our children grown and married providing us with grandchildren.

Not only did we enjoy the hospitality of our playgroup friends, we also caught up with our cruising family from La Barca. La Barca is sold now and Adam and Bronwyn now live in a rustic cottage in the woods of eastern Tasmania. After copious amounts of champagne, we still managed to enjoy the boat festival.

So many beautiful and well cared for wooden boats. We sailed down to Tassie in 2013 and loved the pristine anchorages and the festivities in Hobart. As we didn't get to Port Davey, we have promised ourselves to do this sailing down for the next festival.

The wooden boat festival was also an opportunity for me to sign copies of 'Salvage in my Sarong' at the Boatbooks stand. I enjoyed chatting to a diverse range of people interested in wooden boats. Lati the eBay boat and restoration story in the Caribbean evoked many questions. It also shows that you don't need to spend lots of money on a boat to enjoy cruising. The single mum in this pic is keen to head off and was excited by our story. Her son is learning French and loves baguettes. I said New Caledonia would be the obvious choice for them!
