Waiting out the Weather
11 April 2012 | Portoferraio, Isola de Elba
Gaile
Just as predicted, it is stormy and raining. But, snuggled in a nice berth at the edge of historic Portoferraio is not a bad place to be.
I should mention that Portoferraio is an ancient town, existing in the Greek period, and developed extensively in the 1500's by the Medici of Tuscany. We walked the key areas of the town yesterday for beautiful views from Stella Fortress and the area around the Medici Fort. It is also well known for being the spot where Napoleon was exciled after abdicating his forces at Fontainebleau in 1814, receiving in exchange the sovereignty of Elba island in addition to a few others.
