Medical Clinic on Roatan
30 March 2014 | Roatan - West End Anchorage, Honduras

You don’t want to have to seek medical care in a third world country but sometimes you must. For one cruiser it was a post-dive ear infection. For another it was treatment for a nasty coral cut. For Jerry it was a red blistery skin rash that appeared on the back of his neck and top of his left shoulder the morning after he went diving with Ramona & Paul that kept getting worse and spreading.
The place to go is the clinic located on the grounds of the Anthony’s Key Resort. It’s more than a clinic really; they have the areas’ only hyperbaric chamber (buy the dive insurance offered with dive shop dives, the min charge is US$ 800 if you need to use it. pictures in the gallery soon for those interested in what one looks like). Professional (and nice!) doctors and staff. Very clean, well maintained facility with an laboratory for tests and a well stocked pharmacy so you receive prescribed meds with your visit. Reasonably priced; cash or credit payment at time of care. The only trick is to find it. Even taxi drivers can have a difficult time.
Here’s the scoop (from the West End): Take a local bus to the entrance of Anthony’s Key Resort (L.18 each; collective taxi L. 30 each), walk down the hill to the sign pointing to the gift shop. Keep walking toward the water and turn left (away from the gift shop). The building is on the other side of the gravel parking lot. To catch a bus or taxi back, retrace your steps to the main road.
They work on a first-come first-served basis for non-emergencies. Jerry waited only a few minutes on his first visit. We waited an hour yesterday morning. Bring a book or enjoy the Spanish language Discovery channel that plays continuously on the tv.
One more reason we’re enjoying Roatan.
