Day 17

09 April 2007 | On board
Greg
We discovered today that a lot of our postings were not going onto the web site because I'd left out a bracket (])in the template I use to prepare the day's remote entry. We were wondering why people were not commenting on various things we spoke about in the daily entries. Anyway, I'm told by the Administrator the problem is fixed, so if you get this entry, go back and read the previous 16 days worth of entries that now should be on-line. It's difficult to know what's happening because, of course, we can't see the blog because we don't have internet access at sea.

We now appear to be coming out of the doldrums. We have had very light air for the past few days and have done quite a bit of motoring. Still a few isolated squalls around but nothing major. The breeze kicked in from the SE this morning at 0100 so we've been sailing on a fairly tight reach with about 8 kts of wind since then. There's quite a bit of westerly current so although our landfall is bearing 219 degrees true we are trying to pinch up as much as possible so we don't run the risk of having to beat to windward to make our destination.

At this stage we look as though we'll get in on the morning of April 14 which will make it a 21 day passage at an average speed of just under 6 knots. The average has been knocked back because the last few days have only been 120 mile days. Still, we're not trying to break any records (or any gear, for that matter) so it's very comfortable sailing.
