Screecher Drama - Theatre on the sea

10 May 2011 | Northern Atlantic
Dawn
We are shortly into day 3. So far we have had quite a bit of drama not one boring moment. First of all we still have the dirty fuel problem with the Starboard engine & then on top of that it has decided to overheat probably due to a plastic bag or something around the propeller. Then we decided to put up the Screecher sail which has a bit of a questionable history on Amarula, Gordon Liz & Nick will understand, it is good in winds of 10 knots, which it was & gave us up to 5.5 knots of speed. David very wisely decided to furl the screecher before dark in case of a problem, famous last words. To out horror the screecher only furled 3/4's of the way as the drum ran out of line, we were then faced with the problem of having a billowing screecher which in strong winds would have caused serious problems, there was only one solution scream for help & take it down. The deckhand arrived half naked with only a sarong on & no safety gear on the foredeck, we managed to drop the screecher pole into the water & pull it back on deck, where David detached the furling drum & wound more line onto drum. We managed to re-attach the drum & pole with great difficulty screecher furled once again as darkness hit us. This was quite a dramatic time for us with Captain Blythe screaming orders & me wanting to hit him over the head with the winch handle. A great peaceful happening was a ravenous seagull that flew onto our boat & demanded food, he was very tame & stayed with us for about 5 hours. Our original plan to sail to Bermuda has changed we have decided due to bad weather forecasts of 22 foot high seas & strong winds off Bermuda we will sail direct to the Azores which will take us approximately 22 days.
