Amy, Gene, and Big Dirty

28 June 2014 | Lake rathbun
gene/ 20-25 knot winds
We drove down to the lake for the day and the UN-regatta celebration. Clair started up like a champ, so happy! That happiness was to be short lived. We had a wonderful sail down the lake pushing 5-6 knots flying only our 140 genoa, we have affectionately nicknamed it "The Big Dirty". Not to much excitement on that sail, that all changed when we tacked to return to the main body of the lake. We lost speed and momentum,  causing us to circle fast around ourselves. Helpful hint to all those thinking that sailing is relaxing. It's as much work as it is pleasure. Also, as many of my friends and family know, I am neither a small or weak man. All my strength was put to the test to pull The Big Dirty in. There was yelling, cursing, and some light head trauma, all by me. Amy was awesome! She worried about me when I fell and hit my head on the boom (would have been worse if the pull of Big Dirty wouldn't have slowed me). Amy also forgave my yelling and cursing in frustration. Once we figured it out we got our system down. Sailing with another person requires great communication , and Amy feels that it should be required by all wishing to marry. After all this, Murphy's law had another obstacle for us. The cabin lights, which have not worked all season decided to work today, without us knowing. This great accident drained our battery, and we were unable to start and floated like a dead duck! While Amy asked the usual questions, "what the hell are we going to do?" and " want me to call a tow boat?" I connected our reserve batter and spoke encouraging sweet nothings to our ancient "32 year old" inboard motor. She started eventually and we made it back to our slip. We are still learning and view each sail as our next lesson. Happy sailing!
