Spanish Wells

01 March 2012 | Spanish Wells, Bahamas
Barb/sunny 32
Arrived in Spanish Wells Tuesday, after an easy sail up the coast of Eleuthera, the trip only marred by a fishing boat coming out of Spanish Wells which forced us to deviate from course and mess up the genoa. Easily fixed, but poor manners! Caught a tuna or more accurately 1/3 of a tuna on the way up, barracuda hit it as Tom reeled it in. Still gave us a dinner. Nice to be at a marina, power and water and easy to walk Sammy, but there is a fishing boat behind at the dock behind us that never ever shuts down. 24/7 for 3 days we have been treated to diesel fumes and motor noises. Oh well.
Spanish Wells is a delightful, clean neat community. Very small, everyone has one of a few last names and a very unique accent. Nice people, everyone smiles at you, offers you a ride and wishes you a good day. We have the bikes out, riding around, investigating the streets, shops, and the beach you can reach in a 5 minute walk. Tom got a haircut, thank God, I was about to suggest an elastic band to hold it back. He is probably not the ponytail type.
Today we took the ferry to Harbour Island. A forty minute ride, mostly spent zigzagging through coral reefs. We were reluctant to take our boat on this route, the charts call it the Devil’s Backbone and advise hiring a pilot. Nice day spent shopping, riding through the town, enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, and visiting the Atlantic beach. Exhausting, dosen’t Tom realize he is 71 years old? I am totally pissed off at how much better shape he is in than me. No arthritis, up hills without puffing, strong as a man half his age, accompanied by his much younger (15 years!) wife who can’t keep up!
Leaving tomorrow for Little Harbour, Abaco
