Cruising Maine June 2012 VIII Sunday, June 24, 2012 Somes Harbor, Somesville, Mt. Desert, Maine Water temperature 59 F

We pulled anchor and left McGlathery Island with about a half mile visibility in fog yesterday morning. It was so dead calm we didn't even bother raising the main. After dodging rocks, islands and lobster floats for a few miles we were out on Jericho Bay and the wind picked up. We raised the main, unrolled the jenny and actually sailed for a half hour. The wind dropped again so we rolled up the jenny and motor sailed the rest of the day. It was a drizzly, cold, nasty day and we had the boat closed up and the cabin heat on so by the end of the day the cabin was warm and dry.

The fog never cleared until we entered Somes Sound at Mt. Desert. As we went up the sound, the air was clear down at the water level but 300 foot up, the sides of the fjord disappeared in the fog. We were traveling through a fog tunnel.

As we entered Somes Harbor at the head of the sound, a trawler came up from behind us and tooted their horn. We stopped and they pulled up beside us and asked if we would like a mooring. What wonderful people! They led us to their unused mooring and we thanked them profusely. And to add to the joy, our mooring was close to the mooring that Kelly Rae, our friend Rich's boat, was on. In the evening Rich came over for dinner later and we spent an enjoyable evening catching up.

Here at Somes Harbor there is a dinghy dock to give us access to shore and then a short walk gets us to a place where we can board the free Island Explorer buses that go everywhere on Mt. Desert. We need groceries and we need to do laundry and we can do both of those chores using Island Explorer buses. Wi-Fi is available at the Somesville Library, a short walk away, and we want to have some days just enjoying some of the things Mt. Desert has to offer. We will be at this mooring for awhile.
