Cruising Maine July 2012 Sunday, July 01, 2012 Somes Harbor, Somesville, Mt. Desert, Maine Water temperature 64 F
I took the laptop for a dinghy ride yesterday morning and then walked to the town library where they have free Wi-Fi 24/7. As you can see I put some pictures on the blog. I can only put pictures on or see comments when I have Wi-Fi. My normal blog entries are text e-mails sent over a short wave radio. I-Pads are wonderful toys but without a cell phone tower in the area, the only clouds are the ones you can see and I-Pads are a dead piece of plastic. New cruisers need to come to grips with the reality that when you are out of sight of land, the rules change.
The last two days the temperature has gotten up to 80 deg F. That is hot for Maine. By yesterday afternoon, the water temperature was up to 68 and it was time to do something I have never done in Maine. I went for a swim. People were swimming off boats all around us and it was time to jump in. After the initial shock, it wasn't half bad. I took the opportunity to swim around the boat to do an inspection but didn't dive down to check the prop. When I got out of the water, I rinsed off using the shower bag I had hung in the cockpit. Today looks like it's going to be another hot one (for Maine). I might just have to set some time aside in our busy schedule for another swim.
