Day 3

08 November 2006 | Green Turtle Bay
John / Sunny Warm
This picture says it all we woke up to a river of fog. All traffic was shutdown waiting for it to clear. After 3 hours we pushed out of the chute around 10am with okay visibility. So did the rest of the fleet it was major busy. We made our way down the remaining 1.3 miles of the upper Mississippi to the Ohio and up we went. Tow traffic was lighter and the sun finally came out man did it feel good as we made our way to the Cumberland river. The Cumberland is a beautiful river and a nice change from all the commercial traffic we had seen the last two days. At 3:30 in the afternoon we entered the lock at Lake Barkley Dam and slowly made our way past a tow already tied up in the lock. After we passed the toe we tied up to the bollard the lock master asked me to use. For you non boaters a bollard is a big pin on the side of the lock wall that floats up as the lock fills with water. We tied Daddy to it and it kept us nice and safe close to the lock wall as the turbulent water fills the chamber usually taking about 20 minutes. This lock raised us 57 feet into Lake Barkley. In another 30 minutes we were tied up to the fuel dock at Green Turtle Bay for fuel and then to our slip for the evening. We just got back from a nice dinner at the Commonwealth Yacht Club.
