Sun Power Diesel

26 June 2013 | Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Robert Nordstrom
We had S/V SeaQuell serviced by Just Catamarans who sublet our port saildrive repairs to Sun Power Diesel. Not only did their repairs not fix the problem with water intrusion into the saildrive, the workmanship was poor as well. The repairs were redone by Hinckley Marine in Stuart...

Here's what they had to say about the repairs done by Just Catamarans sublet to Sun Power Diesel:

These deep groves in both prop shafts after only 9 months of service? Rubber on hardened steel... I'll let you decide.

Not to mention the missing o-rings.

We reported the problems to Just Catamarans as soon as we found the problem December. Just Catamarans' Johan immediately responded stating that he had forwarded the detail to the subcontractor and put Sun Power Diesel in Direct communication with us. Boy was that a mistake.

Once the repairs were re-completed in February, we provided pictures and invoices from Hinckley as requested by Just Catamarans & Sun Power Diesel. After many email exchanges and stalls by both...each pointing to the other. Finally after months of waiting, when I finally pressed both for an answer, I got the response I anticipated from the day I reported the problem with the repairs. Response from Just Catamarans:

"In broad strokes our warranty policy is this: on labor, 90 days from date of invoice, FOB Fort Lauderdale, inspection by our own technicians and limited to a maximum value of the original invoice of the specific work being warranted.

That being said, rather than delivering that response to your original complaint, in the interests of wanting to go the extra mile in doing the right thing should something be found to have been sub-standard, we and Sun Power have exhaustively evaluated in detail our respective involvements in the service requirements and actions on your sail drives. This included Sun Power having some discussion with Hinckley Yard to gain better clarity and service history. Despite our scrutiny, we feel that in February 2012, we carried out our respective servicing in good faith and to industry standards based on the information and evidence available to guide us at the time."

This wasn't the only repair done by Just Catamarans with which we had trouble. But the saildrive repairs subcontracted by Sun Power Diesel were done poorly and the failure was absolutely due to poor workmanship.
