Finally!! Headin' South

04 December 2012 | Morehead City, NC to St. Simons Island, GA
Becky
We left Morehead City, NC around 5 am on Friday, Nov. 30. The seas are dead calm/ no wind---- motored out to about 30 miles offshore.

Later in the day on Friday, we were able to put up the spinnaker. Still only 6-8 knots of wind, but it bought us about a knot of speed. Seas are only 2-3 feet with about an 11 second period. Friday night brought more of the same. Robert slept for several hours uninterrupted!!!!

Saturday still brought no significant wind, but wave direction and wind direction are causing a "tilt-a-whirl effect". Making slow, but steady progress. Close to noon, we got a little more wind, and the spinnaker is doing it's job. We are making a steady 7 knots, sometimes a little over 8. We have seen numerous dolphins-- they've played around the boat all day.

By Saturday evening, the wave action has gotten to Becky--- I'm not really sick; just kind of a vertigo sensation. Robert had to prepare his own dinner.
Around 1 am, the winds picked up to about 13 knots and it's raining. Time to douse the spinnaker!!!

Things calmed a bit (seems we got into a short squall), the rain stopped, so we hoisted the spinnaker back up. Becky dozes off, only to be awakened shortly by more rain and increasing winds again. Time to douse the spinnaker again!!

The wind is still about 12-14 knots, so we raise the jib. Cruising along at about 7 knots, and the engines die---- we ran out of fuel--- guess our fancy, new expensive gauge monitors aren't working so well. According to our calculations, a full tank of fuel (100 gallons), should carry us about 600 miles. We've not even been half that yet!! Robert breaks out the 3 Jerry cans--- 15 gallons and slowly siphons the fuel into the tank.

Engines up and running again-- time for Becky to sleep a little. Sleep is hard to come-- the rocky motion makes it difficult. Finally, around 4 am, exhaustion takes over, and I sleep for a couple of hours.

Sunday morning is lovely. Clear skies, calm seas and light wind. VERY light wind. We motored into St Simons inlet around 11am, and arrived at Morningstar Marina around 1 pm.

First item on the agenda-- take Maggie for a much needed potty break. She's "held it" for 56 hours.
Secondly, time for a drink--- Robert mixes while I do doggy duty.
Third, hook up the shore power.
Fourth, RELAX!!!!! Finally!

After a brief rest, we borrowed the marina loaner car and headed out to our favorite restaurant on the island-- Nachos. Several margaritas and fajitas later, we return to SeaQuell. Looks like an early bedtime for us all.

Monday morning dawns beautifully!! Sunshine, warm temps..this makes all the work worthwhile.. So thankful to be in this lovely place- safe and secure!
SeaQuell gets a much needed bath by Becky. Later, Maggie and Becky go for a long, long walk while Robert is hard at work, despite the fact that he feels crappy. He has muscle aches, cough, fever and a headache. Guess this is round 2 of the same bug he had last week.

Robert finishes out his workday, drinks 2 big shots of bourbon, lemon and honey( Becky's home remedy) ,and goes to bed under a pile of blankets.

Today is a much better day. Robert has improved-- still coughing and headachy, but no fever!! Becky has spent most of the day in the laundry room with Maggie as escort. In between loads, we go for walks. We're dressed in shorts and t- shirts, and the sun is shining!!!! Happy just isn't a strong enough word to describe how we feel. Exuberant!!! That's more like it!!

Lovin' our journey. Livin' our dream.
