Helluva Day

29 March 2014
Becky
We left our anchorage at 5:15 am.

Headed out the Lake Worth Inlet . The weather forecast is not optimal for our crossing, but a good window is becoming narrower and narrower. Lydia Grace has decided to turn back, and head back to Stuart, but Karma and SeaQuell head out to sea before first light.

Winds are steady at 15-20 knots, and seas are about 5-7 feet, but with a nice period of 11 seconds.

We raised the jib as soon as we cleared the inlet, and motor sailed until the jib sail pulled apart at the top. Looks like we'll need to raise the main sooner than we planned.

We raised the main, and continued to motor sail for a few hours. Seas are confused and increasing---- not the most pleasant ride. Becky and Judy are a little queasy, despite pre-medicating.

About noon, we put 2 reefs in the mainsail--- winds are a steady 20, with gusts to 30 knots. We are pushing both of our engines pretty hard, trying to cross the Gulfstream.

Our starboard engine overheated after a few hours of running at 2400 RPM's. So now we are running on on engine and the mainsail. Slow go, as the current, waves, and wind are kicking our butt!!

We chug along at about 4 knots---- this is gonna be a LONG 60 miles!!!!!

There is no lunch served today---- galley wenches are sleeping in the cockpit--- drug- induced naps!!! So much for the non-drowsy formula!!

It's late afternoon when we finally make it to Memory Rock--- only 5 more hours to our anchorage at Mangrove Cay.

Later in the afternoon, Captain Robert wishes to try to fly the spinnaker----
It's no small feat to rig this, but everyone is game--- we need all the UMPH we can muster!!!

We get the spinnaker up and it immediately pulls away from the shute, and lands in the water. Damnit!!!! What else is gonna happen today?????

After retrieving the spinnaker, and putting it it away, we decide to just keep plugging along with the main and one engine. We're runnin' outta options here.

Mother Nature decides to throw us another curve---- a thunderstorm!!! Lightning, thunder, heavy rains!!!! What else???

We finally limp into our anchorage around 10 pm. Exhausted, but safe and still smiling!!! It's drinks for Becky, Robert, and Don. Bed for Judy. Gotta be up at 6:00 am to get underway again!!!!

Tomorrow is gonna be a better day---- gotta stay positive!!!!
