All's well on the Good Ship Terrwyn - Celebrating Scupper's Birthday!!

We splashed Terrwyn on Tuesday, January 26 mid afternoon.
After sneaking out of Chaguaramas Bay, Trinidad under the cloak of darkness we sailed along the Trinidad coast heading East. East - you exclaim?!?! But you need to sail West to get to the Panama Canal! Ah yes, but heading East took us out of the clutches of those nasty Venezuelan pirates. And it worked - "Nah-nah-nah poo-poo!!!". ;)
We had filed a Float Plan (similar to a Flight Plan in the aviation world) with the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard just before we left and as we sailed along the coast a T&T Coast Guard helicopter flew over us. The T&T Coast Guard Controller contacted us by radio every 2-3 hours as we sailed East and then tacked to sail NW so we would head closer to our target. It was great to know that they were covering our backs. It also helped to leave in the dark as these pirates are not very sophisticated and do not have radar or any other electronic tracking devices.
We had good wind and the current was at least 1-2 knots heading west the whole time. We sailed as far north as St. Lucia (same latitude) and a good distance West. We had calculated how far NW we needed to go before jibing and heading on course directly to Bonaire.
Looking at the chart last night and seeing that sailing at this rate we would have arrived in the dark tonight. One of our rules on Terrwyn is that we never approach an unknown anchorage in the dark. Never. So we decided to hove-to (sit like a duck) all of today, January 29th, and celebrate Billy's birthday in style. We plan to hoist the sails again at midnight tonight and sail the rest of the way to Bonaire with ETA around mid-morning tomorrow.
Must head up on deck now to check for ships etc. and then start to decide what we will have for Billy's birthday dinner. (His only request is to have homemade bread instead of a cake!!).
Bye for now!
Take care
