Captain John MacKenzie
24 November 2008 | Hopefully 150 miles from Gran Canaria
John MacKenzie
Name: Colin JOHN MacKenzie, Skipper and Owner of Windancer IV
Nickname: Depends who you ask, most commonly Johnny Mac or COLIN
My birthday 27 November 1964 (a 44th Birthday party at sea!)
I was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada (Home of Canadian Club)
I currently live aboard Windancer IV having previously moved from Mississauga (Toronto), Ontario, Canada in April, 2008.
When not sailing, I can be found swimming, skiing and living a "Rock Star" lifestyle with my amazing friends as well as listening to Sirius Satellite Radio (most Howard Stern)
I first got into boating as a young boy, power boating on our 16'bowrider with my mom and dad, water skiing and fishing on Lake St. Clair (yes, it is the little known 6th Great Lake between Lake Huron and Lake Erie). My sailing life began aboard a C&C 36 with the Mcvinnie family on Lake Ontario and continued when Ziggy and I purchased Zephyr, a Beneteau 323 and started planning for this trip. We also chartered in the Tortola aboard Dreamweaver and fell in love with the British Virgin Islands. We purchased Windancer IV in 2004 and I delivered her from Miami, Florida in November, 2004 (just after Hurricane Wilma crushed south Florida - same year as Katrina) and sailed 1000+ nautical miles to Tortola.
On the crossing, I am looking forward to experiencing the Atlantic crossing with my family and friends, fishing and whale watching.
On the crossing, I am dreading the endless number of failures that can happen while at sea (and we have seen many on the trip so far).
When not on watch, you can find me relaxing, reading, watching DVDs, fishing and cooking as well as the obvious telecommunications and navigation duties.
My favourite music is "chillaxing" tunes like The Counting Crows and Jimmy Buffet.
My favourite books are Clive Cussler and Dan Brown novels.
My favourite colour is blue - deep ocean blue.
My favourite food is Penne Arrabiata from Kit Kat in Toronto.
Since I am stuck on a boat for over two weeks, I am definitely bringing everything - just in case of emergency.
The first things I will do when we get to St. Lucia are hug and kiss my family and make my rum drinks (Cruzan Rum, hopefully) for my amazing crew!
