The BIGGEST Day

23 November 2008 | Las Palmas Gran Canaria
Windancer IV Crew
Today, November 23rd, 2008 the crew of Windancer IV will cross the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers start line in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria with 218 other sailboats destined for St Lucia.

After weeks of preparation and reparation, we are ready to do what none of us on Windancer have ever done before - sail over 2800 miles across the Atlantic. Windancer's crew consists of our Captain, John MacKenzie, Ziggy MacKenzie, Bruce Walker, Marlene Elman, Maris Lyons, Connor MacKenzie, Jennifer MacKenzie and Ariel Elman Walker and Ed, the rubber iguana, who has crossed the Atlantic over twenty times and who joins us after the kids of Windancer won his company based on a limerick they wrote. (Check out the World Cruising webside www.worldcruising.com).

We depart today filled with excitement, nervous energy, a little fear, joy, pride and a shared commitment to making this an experience of our collective lifetimes.

We thank you all for your support, well wishes and prayers. There is one more thing you can give us. It gets lonely at sea under our own personal snowglobe with nothing but sky above and water as far as the eye can see.

Once a day, we upload and send emails via satellite. It is a HUGE treat for each of the crew to receive emails, and we ask you to email any of the crew at

cjohnmackenzie@gmn-usa.com

This is the only email that will reach us. Your email can be text base only and please no attachments or pictures.

To thank you, we have pre-loaded blogs that will pop up every day or so. We will not be able to access the blog at sea, but will cherish any comments when we safely arrive on the other side.

You can also track our progress and read blogs from ARC participants at www.worldcruising.com. Select ARC and click fleet viewer to see where we are. We are boat # 155, Windancer IV.

As we type this departure blog, a marching band parades along the pontoon, the crew is washing the deck, and we are saying our final goodbyes to the many friends we have met along the way.

Fair winds and following seas. The Crew of Windancer IV.
