Joined the Navy Again

I've been terribly lacking regarding keeping up with this since we've gotten cell phone coverage. So sorry!

Last Leg to the US

We launched out of Port Lucaya, North Bahamas last evening. Our 17:00 start turned into an 18:00 start when we discovered the main halyard had somehow wrapped the hailing horn and would not allow the main sail to raise. We returned to the marina area and Ryan volunteered to go up the mast to free it. A quick job and we were off again... Then about 21:00 we got hit by a squall. Winds came out of the north at about 35 kts. LL and Marsha were on watch, but fortunately they got me up just in time to get the sails furled before the wind hit! We ended up motoring most of the night until about 03:00, due to fluky winds. Today is nice- cumulus clouds with some thumderheads building on the horizons. We're under the full main and genaker and making mid 7's for speed. Gotta love it! At this pace we'll make Charleston in less that 48 hours. That will give everybody a day to get their land legs back and maybe do a Charleston tour before the creww heads en-mass to SEA, leaving the capt all alone. Still haven't decided if I'm going to try to continue to move the boat northward ar just leave in in Charleston for a few weeks. Any volunteers for crew? Send your resume via email!

Chillin' in St. Maarten

Feb. 8, 2009 Kirk, we are not in jail! The closest we came was a t-shirt that said "arrive on vacation, leave on probation"! You almost got me in trouble with my sisters! Our position is St. Maarten. We are living in a lovely marina called Simpson bay. It is handy to all the boat stuff that Ron & Casey need access to. Life is Sweet. We are not rocking and rolling. We pretty much have the boat organized. It stays really clean compared to when we were out on the rolling seas. Ron & Casey are constantly brainstorming on how to do things. I really appreciate having men around who can fix anything. Our refrigerator went on the blink after I defrosted it and cleaned it. They made a trip to the refrigeration guy, bought him a beer and he told them what the problem could be, but they bought a new thermostat in case, and that is what the problem was. It is good to have a refrigerator that works properly. My days seem to be a little more laid back than the boys. I get up, drink coffee, after breakfast, I do the dishes. Then I go lie in the sun for a couple of hours and read my book. After I get tired of doing nothing, I go up to the int ernet caf, send emails and make phone calls. After I get tired of that, I come back to our house (it still has not sunk in) have a cocktail and cook dinner and then do the dishes. As I have said in the past, it is a good thing I can cook and do dishes! Laundry is really easy, they don't have do it yourself laundry mats here, you send it out and have it done. I'm liking that! I do make trips to the market and the bakery. We have a great little bakery not far from here that has wonderful croissants and baguettes; we indulge in one or both everyday. Grocery shopping takes on a whole different meaning when you have to carry everything that you buy. I have yet to venture to the market by myself. I need to start doing that. They have buses that you wave down, jump in, pay a dollar or so and get off wherever you want. It is lots less expensive than taxis. We will try to be better at updating the blog. We (I) just get so busy doing nothing, that it is the last thing on my mind, until I talk to my dear sisters. Photos of our wonderful surroundings will follow in the next few days. Casey promises!
