I'm in Antarctica
14 March 2010 | McMurdo Station , Antarctica
Today I was reminded of where I am. It's easy to forget just what a wondrous place this is when your in McMurdo because your in town and working. Well, today I got out of town. It was a beautiful day. Sun shining and no wind at all. I was able to get to a place where you couldn't here the drown of the power plant generators or see any thing that was man made. Total silence. Breath taking views. The sun shining on the sea ice made thousands of prisms. Lighting up the ice field like a ocean of diamonds. Blue, gold, green and red.
As I stood beside the frozen sea, I thought of all the explorers of old who had been here and seen just what I was seeing. Living in there little shacks or leaky ships, in this harsh place. And what a day like today would have meant to them. A reprieve, respite, from the struggle to survive here. Because today was one of those glorious days in Antarctica, when being on the harshest continent in the world was actually the most beautiful place to be.
Peace, Love and Antarctica
