Q: So, what's been happening on Discovery the last few days, Captain?
Captain Andy: Well, let's see, the last couple days on Discovery have been, to tell you the truth, a bit monotonous. It's the middle part of a long crossing, the first days are passed and we're settled in to cruising mode. You just have to make sure you've got some good books on board.
Q: What are you reading?
CA: I am in fact reading a Tom Clancy novel....This part of the crossing is the hardest for me.
Q: In what way the hardest?
CA: Because we are so far away from both our starting point and finish point, and I guess with weather conditions a bit unsettled, things just seem to drag a bit. I really like to cruise, but the crossings are not my favorite.
Q: Have you seen any other vessels?
CA: Two days ago, we were passed by S/V String Theory, which was returning to Victoria after completing the Victoria to Maui sailboat race. And yesterday we were in radio contact with Jam who was also just one mile off our stern until they blew by us like we were a turtle in a mud puddle. Jam was also in the Vic/Maui race. It was great talking to both boats. We also happened upon the radio net for the Vic/Maui return group and they welcomed us in on their net. It will be nice to converse with them along the way. We will, no doubt, come in last.
Q: Anything else, Captain?
CA: One reason the crossings are so tedious is because I don't get to socialize. So being in contact with these boats really helps a lot. Betty can't do it all.
