Jacksonville Beach

After St. Augustine, we continued north towards Jacksonville. We are getting out of the more populated areas now as we get closer to Georgia. Now we have a very winding waterway through the marshes. All of a sudden navigation has gotten way more challenging as we have a narrower channel, and there is a lot more shoaling. We experienced our first grounding in this area and I will admit I was at the helm. I didn't like that feeling at all, but there was no damage done as it is just mud, and we were coming up to a rising time so we just had to wait about an hour, and then we were able to back off. The worst part may have been having several boats pass us by as we sat there--grounding humiliation! Travelling the waterway is a game of numbers. Watch the depth, keep an eye on your marker numbers on both sides, red and green, how fast is the current running shown by how fast you are going, and don't lose your concentration because it is hard to get yourself back on track.
