Cherbourg to St Vaast
19 August 2012
Today, Cherbourg was covered in thick fog. This part of the coast is susceptible to this, as warm moist air comes up from the Channel Islands and meets colder air in the channel.
Since we have radar and AIS we decided to carry on with the trip to St Vaast anyway. There is also no shipping after the entrance to Cherbourg. Even though we didn't see anything for the whole trip, it was uneventful, just dodging small fishing boats on the radar as we arrived off St Vaast.
The picture above shows the entrance to St Vaast at low tide. We came over this mud only 5 hours ago!
We arrived early enough to get some shopping in town before lunchtime closing. All shops close at 12:30pm and reopen at about 3pm. Today it is a Sunday so they don't open in the afternoon at all.
Walking back to the marina, we found a stall cooking meat on a rotisserie. This is a large wood fire cooking chickens, lamb and racks of pork. The great thing is that the juices from the lamb at the top and the pork run down on the chickens at the bottom. Judging by the large queue, most of whom had pre-ordered their meat; it looked like it might be good. We bought a chicken for tea. However, by the time we got back to the boat, we thought it would be even better for lunch! Anyway, it was delicious!
We went for a walk along the seafront to a fort this afternoon. Tonight, it was interesting watching all the fishing boats leave on the high tide. We plan to move on to Le Havre tomorrow.
