Porto Santo Stefano

We had to leave Giannutri early the next morning as the wind direction changed and we would have been pushed onto the rocks. The weather was due to change. There was a Gale Force 7 with gusts forecast on the VHF radio, from the French Riviera and down across Corsica. It sounded like the Mistral. In the [...]

Isola di Giannutri

We have now reached the island of Giannutri which is one of the Tuscan islands. It is wild and exposed. The island forms a natural crescent shape, shallow enough to anchor close to the shore, otherwise it is too deep. There is a little harbour where the ferry lands. We anchored quite close to some rocks, [...]

Riva di Traiano

We motored round from Rome and the sea still had remnants of swell. Three and a half hours later, we reached the marina at Traiano. This is a large modern well protected marina with cafes, restaurants and chandleries.

Porto di Roma

At 8.30am, we slipped our lines at Nettuno and headed towards the port of Rome. It was warm, but the air was muggy with little wind. On the VHF radio, we heard a Force 7 to 8 gale warning for Corsica, broadcast in Italian, French and English. Simon had already seen on the forecast an increase in swell [...]

Nettuno

It was a calm day with a light wind, so we motorsailed from Ponza to the marina at Nettuno. We had been here last year and had to watch the depth at the marina entrance. In one patch the depth sounder recorded 2.7m, we draw 2.1m. On the approach to the marina, we prepared to tie up, alongside rather [...]

Isola di Ponza

After a brief walk around Ventotene, we had breakfast in a café and bought a few food items in a little grocery shop. It was calm at sea, and we saw an army helicopter overhead, that did a fly by and circled the boat twice.

Deauville to St Vaast

24 June 2014
Deauville is an interesting place and not quite what we were expecting. It has a race course, international film festival, marinas, conference centre, villas, Grand Casino, polo matches and sumptuous hotels. We found one hotel offering rooms for €3,500 per night. (We only paid €33 in the marina). Deauville is regarded as the Parisian Riviera.

We spent Monday walking over the bridge from Deauville to Trouville. This is a typical Normandy town and different from the playground for the rich. We found a boulangerie that sold filled baguettes and fresh orange juice which we had for lunch sat in a small park over looking the river. It was low water after lunch, so we walked across the temporary walkway they set up at low tide to get back to Deauville. In the evening after 7pm, when they allow dogs on the beach, so we went for a swim with Bella. That night we went to a small street restaurant back in Trouville for dinner.

We were up early on Tuesday to take Bella for a walk along the boardwalk at Deauville. The sandy beach was being cleaned by a tractor towing a cleaning machine and the polo ponies were being ridden along the water's edge. Back at the boat, we left at freeflow through the lock for St Vaast at 10am.

There was very little wind on the trip to St Vaast and it was calm enough to have lunch outside at the table while at sea, which is extremely unusual. After lunch the wind had picked up and we had a great 3 hour sail on one tack into St Vaast.

We arrived at St Vaast too early for the lock, so we anchored off for 40 minutes before entering the marina.

The picture above shows the restocking of the Oyster beds at low tide in St Vaast.

We are planning to stay in St Vaast until Sunday. Simon needs to wait for a contract to be posted from work which needs to be signed and returned before moving on. Also we know the Saturday market sells excellent roast chicken which is worth waiting for!
