St Vaast to Dielette
29 June 2014
We woke on Sunday to thunder and lightning, but this little storm soon passed to reveal a sunny day with a steady wind. We set off at midday, had a good sail around the point of Barfleur, home of the mussel farming area. Just past Barfleur we came across an area of confused water and realised that we had sailed near an underwater cliff.
We sailed through the Alderney Race, a fast flowing rush of water. We then slowed down to meet our time for entering the sill of the port of Dielette. Simon did some fishing with the mackerel line and feathers and caught one large mackerel, which we had for tea.
Monday we went to the beach and knowing that the tides are extreme here, we went at high tide, for a swim. Bella was the only one who swam completely submerged. Simon had a quick dip and Fiona had a paddle, as the water was ice cold and a lot colder than the sea at Deauville, a week ago. We had moules and frites for lunch at the cafe.
Tuesday we are off again for a long sail down to Isle de Chausey. We hope anchor or get a mooring buoy for a few days and explore the island.
