River Rance to Binic
11 July 2014
Early morning, Simon took Bella ashore while Fiona made some dinner for later in the day. We left the anchorage and motored to the lock.
Fiona called the lock keeper in French and he had understood perfectly what she had said, but he replied in English!
We had about a 30 minute wait in the lock and then they lifted the road bridge and we motored out to sea. The wind was against us for the first 3 hours, so we continued to motor. Once we altered course towards Binic, we were able to sail.
When we arrived at the entrance to Binic, there was still another 2 hours before the lock would open. It only operates when there is at least 8.5m of tide. We anchored at sea in what was quite rough conditions. It's strange to think that even though we were anchored in 5 meters of water, at low tide you could have walked ashore.
Once in the lock, it was clear that Binic is a really pretty place. It's a small seaside town.
Yesterday a local sailing race finished in the port and we watched the competitors enter the lock. On Sunday we are going to what is the described as a Mackerel party with BBQed Mackerel. The poster said 'Ambiance Garantie', so it should be good!
