Fecamp to Dieppe
15 August 2014
On Friday we moved on from Fecamp to Dieppe. We waited until 1:30pm for the lock to open and once through, we put the sails up while leaving the harbour. Lilly had also left an hour or so before us.
There was a good wind blowing and again with a strong tide with us we were moving fast.
About 3 hours into the trip we could see storm clouds and very heavy rain both in front and also behind us. We also noticed a water spout out to sea. To begin with it was interesting to watch until we realised that it was coming our way! It looked about 20 meters across coming up from the sea. There was a second part coming down from the clouds. Not really sure what damage it could do if it hit us we decided to take the jib down and start the engine. It was still heading towards us, so we took the mainsail down as well and started motoring out of its path. We also put away anything that could fly up if it hit us. By motoring very fast we managed to just avoid it and it passed behind us.
We visited Dieppe on the way down. It's a very nice port with plenty to do and see. The picture above is of Dieppe harbour. There are some stronger winds coming over the weekend, so we plan to stay in Dieppe until after they have passed.
