Dieppe to Calais
19 August 2014
We had a few good days in Dieppe with a meal on board Lily on Saturday and they came over for a meal on Sunday.
On Monday we visited the museum for the Second World War raid on Dieppe. This was an Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe. The raid took place on the northern coast of France on 19 August 1942. The assault began at 5:00 a.m. and by 10:50 a.m. the Allied commanders were forced to call a retreat. Over 6,000 British, Canadian and US troops took part and 3,623 were either killed, wounded, or captured. It's amazing to think that all this took place on the beach we sat on in the morning!
There were some strong winds over the weekend so we did not want to move on until Tuesday although many boats left on Monday. We left on Tuesday at 8am. We got the sails up in the harbour and with the wind still blowing over 20 knots we were sailing fast.
We were originally aiming for Boulogne but we had already arrived off the port at 3pm. Since Fiona will be taking Bella back to the UK from Calais, we decided to push on and get to Calais.
The sailing around Cap Nez Gris was superb and we were still doing 6 to 7 knots against the tide. We then ran along the coast and into the port of Calais. We had just missed one of the hourly lock openings so picked up a waiting buoy and entered an hour later.
The picture above is of us sailing around Cap Nez Gris.
We plan to be in Calais for a few days while we get a car form the UK to take Bella back to Dover. The UK regulations state that dogs entering the UK can only do so on a registered ferry route after they have visited a vet beforehand.
