29 April 2010 | Vlieland to Borkum, Germany 75Nm travelled
skip sunny still!
Well, another early start and it was off towards Germany, and to the German Friesian Islands, and Borkum to an old ex-Naval base.
Strange place that we only stayed overnight. A real air of desolation, although a very friendly welcome from the harbour master.
As I walked across the old parade ground to go pay our mooring fees someone was exercising a Dobermann dog....
and I felt I was in a different era. The pontoons were only for large ships so we had to scramble up the rig to get off Emerald
and ashore. Next day we wanted to keep heading East and to get to Nordeney which is a good staging post to cross the
dangerous German Bight and the shoals and sands on the entrance to the River Elbe. We intend to head to Cuxhaven and then into the
Kiel Canal (Nord-See Kanal).
We've managed to cover more ground than we thought, and thankfully the weather gods have been kind so far. However we always
monitor the weather and are always cautious in our passage planning ensuring that where possible we leave in the daylight and
arrive at a new port in the daylight also.
Until next time, this is Germany calling, Germanly calling
