A night on Sonderborg Town Quay

19 May 2010 | Stranderod Bugt to Sonderborg Denmark 15Nm travelled

We feel we are properly cruising now and getting into the rythym of moving on. The weather remains stubbornly wet, cold and windy. But that's ok, the waters we are in are pretty sheltered, so despite the winds there is little fetch for the sea to build into large or rough waves. So weather that would have us running for cover in the Channel is a good day's sail here.
We left Stranderod, in the Flensburg Fjord about 9.30 am intending to sail either to Sonderborg, or onto Dyvig at the top of Als sound. We sailed most of the day under Genny alone at times reaching 6.5 knots in the gusts which was a relaxing way to handle the conditions, as we didn't get caught with too much canvas when the williwaws came barrelling down the fjord. We tied up onto the town quay undecided whether to push on or not, and in the end decided to stay for the night. We had to get money, as we had no Danish Kroner, and needed a beer to welcome us properly to Denmark.
£9.60 for two (small!!) drinks later, we made our excuses and left the bar!! A further trip to the supermarket was then required to top up the onboard beer mountain!
We got up next morning and waited for the bridge to open to allow us through into Als sound, with a F6-7 where else but on the nose.
