Furthest East and 1000Nm already this season

17 June 2010 | Helsingor to Torekov 28Nm travelled
skip squally
So we were up early in Helsingor to convert the last of our Danish Kroner to beer at opening time
in the supermarket. It felt a bit surreal buying beer and cider at 9am in the morning, we did get some funny
looks at the checkout!! Our arms certainly got a workout on the long walk back. Why did we do it you ask? Mainly
because beer is expensive in Denmark, VERY expensive in Sweden, and EXTORTIONATE in Norway, so we wanted to ensure
we had enough to see us to Scotland, without the need for severe rationing, and the subsequent dip in crew morale.
We got back to Emerald and ready to go by 9.30am and it was off to Sweden, and a place called Torekov (which to
my mind sounded rather Russian), where we intended to stop overnight before heading northward. So we bid farewell
to Denmark, as we headed out of the Sound and crossed the traffic separation zone, causing Larry Ellson of Oracle
fame to dodge us in Rising Sun, his super yacht, (google it) and it was time to hoist a new courtesy Flag, our
4th so far this trip.
The sail itself was pretty uneventful, from what I remember we motored quite a bit, as the wind was on the nose.
We made for the entrance to the harbour not really sure what to expect, as we could be alongside a pontoon, onto piles,
using lazy lines, or even having to drop a stern anchor, which we hadn't rigged, each of our harbour guides gave a
different story, so we were definitely apprehensive entering.

However there was an empty alongside berth, (sometimes there is good karma!)
with an easy approach to it, though with possibly the smallest mooring rings I've ever seen, we didn't even know
if our lines would fit through! However the final landing went well, and we got squared away, with free electricity
and water beside us as well as endless hot showers in spotless shower block, that you didn't have to pay for, and a really helpful
harbour master. The forecast for the following day was not good, with 30 knots constant for most of the day,
we decided to stay put, as the Kattegat area can get short, steep and nasty seas very quickly. We were glad we did
when we looked out over the breakwater to see breaking waves to the horizon the next day.

Torkev has thus become our 'farthest East' point of the trip this season. It is also the farthest east Emerald has probably
been in 31 years, since the delivery of the hull from Taiwan in 1979 when it was built, to USA, california and on to the Caribbean.

12 degrees, 37.6 minutes East

We also passed another milestone just north of the sound, which is that we passed 1000Nm for this trip so far since April 7th
when we left Brighton possibly for the last time.

After two days at Torekov it was time to head north again, and turn our bows westwards towards blighty and begin the slow journey west
again. We have a lot more miles to cover, even to get back to the UK at Peterhead in Scotland, but this definitely feels like
an important point in the trip, rather than heading away from the UK we are now once again heading towards it.

slainte
skip.

Photo is of a hut which has all the name boards from the ship wrecks on the reefs around Torekov, a sobering monument for a sailor.
