Lagos grottoes

11 November 2013 | Lagos, Portugal
Nichola / sunny and warm
Lagos grottoes 10th November
Sunday was nice and warn so we took a walk out to Pointe de Piedade to see the rock formations and grottoes. The cliffs are made of sandstone which is quite soft and wind and weather have worn the cliffs away to leave pinacles, caves, blowholes and arches.

Grottoes

We tried walking along the cliff edge but the danger signs and evidence of recent rock falls made us take the safer option of staying a little further inland where we were able to find sandy tracks through the scrubland. Along the way we came across a couple of resorts, big private villas and sadly a fair few abandoned building projects and derelict hotels.

Grottoes

At the point stands a lighthouse, very useful amongst the jaggedy and tumbling rocks. We took a set of steps sign posted down to the grottoes where we got a close up view of arches and caves. We could also see close up just how crumbly the cliffs really are.
