Galago's place of birth

19 August 2009 | Falmouth
Nichola / Drizzle
The photo above is Galago's place of birth at Gweek Quay. Galago was Colin's previous boat.

We visited Gweek by dinghy up the Helford River from our anchorage at the mouth of the Helford. The river is lovely - trees down to the water, lots of birdlife and little creeks branching off the main river to explore. We went up on high tide at the river dries at Gweek. Most of the activity at the boatyard seemed to be restoring work rather than any new build.

The Helford River was a pretty anchorage, little sandy coves to explore, no commercial traffic other than the odd fishing boat and little villages with provisions not too far away. We had a fabulous meal at the Helford Yacht Club - along with a few extra drinks whilst we waited for some water under the dinghy!

We are now in Falmouth for a week - time to get laundry done, visit with family in Cornwall and to hire a car for a couple of days so that I can show Colin all the places I remember from my childhood holidays down here. We holidayed at a place called Troon, a little village outside Camborne every year from my age 1 to 15, staying with my Aunty Lily (I think she was my great-great aunt).

Falmouth is very busy - we had to pick our way through lots of moored boats to get to the Visitors Yacht Haven with little motor boats buzzing around us. Not fun in big bertha Emerald. But we are now enjoying being attached to shore and all the easy access to things that brings.
