Bye bye Itaparica, bye bye Brazil

26 June 2011 | Brazil
We’ve been “hiding out” in Itaparica for long enough now – its time to leave this laid back anchorage and head across the bay to Salvador to do a major stock up on food, some repairs and clear out with immigration.
Our alternator has not been charging for a while. Leon has taken it out and apart 3 times and still not working. It’s either the diodes or its just dead. So at the moment we have one alternator running the house batteries, if the one that is working dies on us at sea we will have a bit of a power problem. So we need to have that done ASAP and then all we have to do is wait for the “weather window”. It looks as if we might be able to leave as soon as Thursday this week, but we will decide that on Wednesday. We are headed from Salvador for Tobago. It is a 2980 mile journey which should take us 24 days – then again it could take 28 days! This will be our longest journey – Cape Town to St Helena was only 14 days. We might stop in Fernando de Noronha but we will make that call as we sail past.
