Our arrival at Benalmenda marina signaled the end of our first leg of the delivery. It was here that the constant race against time and arguments with Boris would force Manny to make a difficult decision. Although he certainly believes that a delivery skipper never abandons ship, something had to change.
Malaga Spain lies on the Costa del Sole and the heart of this country's tourism. The Benalmenda marina was built around a hotel complex and surrounded by rental units, a casino, chip shops, Irish pubs and dollar stores. Nothing here beckoned to explore. So, while Boris ran Ilia to the airport, the rest of the crew were happy to spend the day resting and organizing ourselves for the next leg.
Just before he left, Boris announced that we had only 24 hours to get ready because his family was flying in to Palma de Mallorca for a five day vacation aboard Ellen and we needed to get there on time.
Boris was constantly on the move, as if his life was a race against the clock. That held true not only for his deadline for arriving at Malaga, or Palma, but also for every small thing - provisioning, a walk around town, making supper. Once I found myself joining Boris to help with a conversation with the dock master at a large marina. As I tried to keep pace, I found myself racing down the dock, my short legs making two steps for every one of his long legs. I decided to slow down. "For heaven's sake" I thought, "what am I doing? He can run through life, but I don't have to."
So it was that the next day we parted with another crew member, Noam, who made a quick decision to step out of this race and to fly home from Malaga too. Now we were a crew of four.
Before we left, I checked the weather forecast and found that within forty eight hours a Levanter (gale force winds from the east) was expected. I put forth the suggestion to sail eighty miles up the Spanish coast to a good marina and to put in there for twenty four hours. We could provision, do laundry, prepare the boat for Boris's family visit and allow the bad weather to pass. Then next day we could take advantage of the friendlier seas and better wind direction to make course for Palma.
Boris quickly replied: "No way! We have no time to waste in marinas. We will head straight for Palma."
Manny took him aside for a talk. I wasn't there, but Manny assures me that the conversation was short and to the point. Manny had had enough. Either Boris could leave us to deliver the boat on our own, or he could find another delivery skipper to replace Manny in Palma. Manny would even help him find someone. Boris readily agreed to be the one to leave and told Manny that he would fly back home with his family at the end of their vacation. We would complete the rest of the delivery on our own.
With lighter hearts, Ellen and her remaining crew sailed out of Malaga under clear skies and flat calm seas. Soon enough we all began to notice the difference of sailing in the Med. The weather was warmer allowing us to go barefoot and to wear shorts and T shirts throughout the day. Night watches still required wet weather jackets and sweatpants, but we could put away our overalls.
By noon the first day out, we were motor sailing at seven knots. I heard someone call out "dolphins to port!" and when I came on deck there was the biggest pod of dolphins we had seen so far. There were more than forty of them diving, surfing the bow waves, chasing each other far off to the side and racing back to surface between the hulls. For well on half an hour we filmed and watched them entranced by their play.
Later that evening Mosheko finally caught his first fish! After weeks of trolling lines he was ecstatic and patiently reeled in a three kilo tuna. That night's watches were full of fish stories and cooking advice.

Throughout the night the wind built in strength and veered to the east until the next day when the Levanter was in full force. Bang on time. Throughout the day the motion on board once again became miserable. The cat's motion made doing even the smallest thing a chore. Just moving from one place to another was tiring. Climbing up to the fly bridge became a slippery test of balance. Soon enough, those of us with queasy stomachs just gave up and retired to our bunks. Most irritating was the knowledge that this weather could have been avoided.
After twenty four hours the wind abated and the sea began to calm down. Mid day we stopped for a swim and the chance to have a cruiser shower. On my night watch, I was greeted by the lights of Ibiza and we were able to change course and sail for Palma. Just a couple of hours before arriving we caught another tuna - ten kilos this time. So on July 27th, we arrived in Palma de Mallorca with our freezers full of fish, ready to greet our new guests.
Palma is the major harbour on Mallorca, the biggest island in the Balearics. For many years Palma has been a favourite destination for visiting yachts and today sports over 3000 berths in various marinas. Our heads swiveled in all directions as we ogled the huge mega yachts lining the piers. We were arriving in peak season and available dock space was limited with prices reflecting the demand.
Along with Boris's family we greeted Dima, our new crew member for the rest of the delivery. While they settled in, Manny set out to find a Yanmar dealer that could service Ellen's two engines. Being a new boat, her engines were still under warranty. When he finally found a shop, he was quoted 300 Euro per engine for an oil and filter change. That quickly changed the picture and he did the job himself. My laundry bill for two bags of sheets, towels and few personal items added up to 46 Euro and our marina berth was the most expensive yet at 160 Euro a night. At the dock and throughout the town, Palma is all about money.
We had finished our dockside chores and it was time for some peace and quiet. That evening we set off for a nearby anchorage. For the next three days Boris' family lounged in the sun, read books, and played in the sea. Between cooking and cleaning the crew also found time to relax. We lowered the dinghy into the water and took turns exploring the coastline. Dima tied off a halyard and we all took turns swinging off of Ellen's fly bridge and jumping in the water. I began each morning with an asana practice. We swam and rested.

By Saturday evening we all felt ready to carry on for the last half of our delivery. First we had to return to Palma. We intended to drop off Boris and his family and then get a marina berth for the night. Five days with eight people on board had left us without any fresh provisions or water. Two hungry teenagers had wiped out our night watch locker and all our bread. We needed to refuel, fill our water tanks, give Ellen a good wash and take on some stores.

However we arrived back in Palma smack in the middle of regatta weekend, the busiest four days in all the year. As we circled the bay, I radioed marina after marina only to be told the same news. There wasn't a berth to be had. Once again Boris had ignored our advice and refused to reserve a berth in advance. As he stepped off the boat, my relief at finally being on our own was tempered by Boris's parting shot. Ellen had empty fuel and water tanks and we would have to make do with canned food until we reached our next port.
This was where having an Israeli crew had its big rewards. When we pulled into the gas dock and were stubbornly told that although we could take on fuel, we could not tank up with water, or sit dockside even for an hour while we provisioned, I was taken aback. We went straight to the dock masters's office to plead our fate.
NO water from the fuel dock we were told. "You have to take a berth."
"Okay" we said.
"Sorry there are no berths available tonight. Regatta Weekend."
"We'll pay for the water."
"NO water from the fuel dock."
Round and round we went, but they wouldn't budge. Then we approached the yacht club's commodore and had a repeat of the same conversation. Outrageous as it seemed, my Canadian upbringing led me to accept our inevitable fate. At least we had had the sense to take on lots of bottled water back in La Rochelle, I thought. We had drinking water, but we'd have to do all our washing in salt water for the next few days.
Back aboard Ellen, Manny handed me our shopping bags, some Euros and the handheld VHF. He called Dima to help me and sent us off to the supermarket. "Take your time!" he urged. As we walked down the dock, I looked back over my shoulder wondering what he was up to.
Dima and I spent a couple of hours hiking to the supermarket and shopping for provisions. As we headed back towards the marina, we radioed Manny who assured us he would be waiting for us alongside the fuel dock when we arrived back. Sure enough, as we arrived at the end of the dock, Ellen came alongside. We threw our bags of groceries on deck, climbed on board and Manny motored off. We found Ellen clean from a wash down, with full fuel and water tanks. As we pulled away from the dock, Mosheko and Manny were all grins. "How did you pull that off?" I asked.
"Well, first we offered the gas attendant fifty Euro to fill our water tanks. - It's amazing what a little baksheesh will do - Then just as the tanks were full, Mosheko grabbed the hose and told me to stand in front of him. He began to quickly hose down the decks as I walked in front of him shielding him from the gas attendant's view. When we were finished we tried to linger dockside, but we could see we were really trying their patience, so we motored over to the commercial dock - the dock for tugs - opposite. We threw a really long line over one bollard to keep us parallel and then let Ellen fall off. When the security patrol passed, it looked to all the world like we were motoring by, but we were really tied off their dock. We cracked two beers and sat there until you called. Then we slipped our dockline, started our engines and timed our arrival at the gas dock to just coincide with yours. "
As Ellen pulled away and we passed by the surprised gas attendants, I called out "Muchas gracias" and they laughed giving us the thumbs up. We'd beat the system.
We motored out of the Bahia de Palma and Manny set our course for Sicily. The crew shared smiles all around. We had completed half our delivery and learned many lessons along the way. Ahead of us lay new countries, more adventures and finally - the time to enjoy each day.

La Coruna turned out to be one of our favourite ports of call. Due to our broken auto helm, we had a few days to wait for parts. Darsena del Marina was a small friendly place with a few berths for visitors and the walls of the old city lay just across the street from the marina. We quickly made friends with the marina secretary who always had time to give directions and share advice.
Mornings we cleaned up Ellen washing off the thick layers of salt that seem to get everywhere after just a few days at sea. We washed piles of laundry and repaired what needed fixing. Afternoons we explored the old city. None of us had ever visited northern Spain and we were entranced.
We walked for hours through the winding alleyways discovering yet another local eatery or pub. Noam, Mosheko, Manny and I took a tram ride out to the Hercules lighthouse, reportedly the oldest lighthouse in the western world. After climbing up to the tower, we looked down on the Ria with its rolling green hills reminiscent of the Azores.

One evening, after a meal together in a tiny restaurant with the best seafood we've eaten, Mosheko Manny and I decided to find a pub. "Just a night cap" we said. Before long, down a series of winding allies, we found just the place. Only a crook in the wall, the pub was a jumble of fishing nets, Morrocan fabrics and Turkish pillows. There was the tang of Cannabis in the air. Through the haze of smoke we found a table in a small alcove with a view to the bar. For the next couple of hours the three of us reminisced about being twenty five again.
The next evening Noam joined us and we found a small shop busy with locals specializing in locally smoked meat. Inside were several tables where customers were served platters of thinly sliced smoked meat and cheese. We quickly agreed that this was dinner and we ordered a platter for ourselves alongside a bottle of local red.

On Friday morning the replacement for our auto helm arrived and it was time to get underway again. We still had Cape Finister to round and this time the weather looked promising.
Around this time a problem arose. Boris had booked a flight for Ilia on July twenty third from Malaga, Spain. What with the delay in Coruna, Manny explained that it would be questionable if we could make it and perhaps it would be a good idea to change Ilia's flight to Lisbon, Portugal just a short train ride from Caicais. Caicais lay about four hundred sea miles down the coast and had a good marina with an all weather entrance.
As we set out again, Boris seemed content with this plan and even said he had arranged the new flight. However once we were underway, Boris suddenly took a change of heart and over the net few days the tension on board became so thick, you could cut it with a knife. No matter how fast we sailed Boris wanted us to go faster.
We had a smooth passage and rounded Cape Finister in light winds. Then Manny set a course that allowed us to raise sails and keep a safe distance from shore. Boris went up to the steering station and immediately revved the engines. Manny went up to the fly bridge and explained why he wanted to keep off shore, sail and save on fuel. Boris argued. He was in a hurry. The rest of us rolled our eyes and tried to find humour in the situation, although the motion on board at fast speeds was becoming quite uncomfortable.
What with our frantic pace, we had a fast passage to Caicais and Boris had a change of mind. We would only stop to refuel and then set straight out for Gibraltar because if we really pushed it we still could make Malaga by the twenty third. Long faces reflected the crew's response to this new plan. What about, a walk around town to stretch our legs, buy some fresh produce and a good shower?
"No time!" was the response.
The crew rebelled and after a group intervention, he agreed to allow us three hours dockside before we set out again. This trip was beginning to feel like a race.
Within three hours to the minute, we untied dock lines and longingly looking back over our shoulders at the pretty town of Caicais we set off for Gibraltar.

Our passage to Gibraltar was highlighted by light winds and dolphins. We had seen groups of dolphins all along the Atlantic, and as we neared Gibraltar they were even more frequent. On this passage Noam's cooking skills excelled and each meal outdid the last. In high spirits, we entered the strait with favourable conditions. The current was with us and the winds were very light, so light in fact that Mosheko, Boris and Ilia all had a swim off the stern. By late afternoon of the twenty second we were sailing past the rock.
As we exited the strait and entered the Mediterranean we were greeted by twenty three knots of west wind. Through the night we tacked up the southern coast of Spain and at first light on the twenty third, just hours before Ilia's flight we entered Benalamenda Marina. Our dock was just a taxi ride from the Malaga airport.
"See" Boris said. "I told you Ilia would make his flight."

In case you are wondering just what happened to us these past couple of months, worry not. Change certainly came and it came quite quickly. For me who digests change slowly, this summer has been a mind boggling mix of excitement, worry and many, many challenges. But I am getting ahead of myself.
Late June, after a month of idle chatter, Manny suddenly closed the deal on a delivery job. This was to be the longest delivery we have done yet and for us required lots of preparation. How do you just up and leave students you regularily teach, clients you have lined up work with and your floating home at the drop of a hat? How do you find crew, acquaint yourself with several different cruising areas and learn a new boat's systems in a couple of weeks? Let me tell you it isn't easy, but it is possible.
Our summer job was to fly to France and pick up a brand new, luxury, 50 foot catamaran and deliver it over 3000 miles along the Atlantic coast, through the strait of Gibraltar across the Mediterranean, through the Suez Canal and up the Red Sea to Eilat. The boat, Ellen, was a Lagoon 500 and would be used for chartering.
And so it was at the beginning of July that Manny, Mosheko and I set out for La Rochelle France. After twenty four hours of waiting around airports, cramming into crowded charter flights and driving all night long through the French countryside, we arrived tired and excited about the start of this great adventure. We were welcomed aboard by Boris, the man who is managing the whole operation and his nephew Ilia. Ellen, our home for the next two months was floating gently at La Vieux Port in La Rochelle.
Barely able to keep our eyes open after twenty four hours in transit, Manny and I jittered with the excitement of being in France again. Here we were in the land of baguettes, camembert cheese and may I add cheap wine! However, before we could enjoy France's culinary delights we had lots of work to do.
The first leg of our delivery was up the infamous Bay of Biscay and along the Atlantic coast of Spain and Portugal to Gibraltar. We had only a few days to finish commissioning Ellen, do some trial sails and provision. At every spare minute, I tried to keep a watch on the weather with hopes of finding a good window to get us around Cape Finister.

For this leg we would have on board Boris, Ilia, Mosheko and Noam, our last crew member who would join us in a few days. Knowing that Boris and Ilia had never sailed before, Manny planned on doubling up watches, a strategy that turned out to be well chosen.
Just five days after arriving, at the end of a long day of provisioning and installing yet more new equipment, Boris suddenly decided that it was time to go. Ilia had a flight back to Israel from Malaga Spain on July twenty third and Boris was determined to make it on time. Manny and I swallowed our concerns about racing the clock and safe passages - a theme that was to resurface again and again on this delivery. I quickly checked the weather one more time and saw that while we did not have an ideal weather window, it wasn't the worst.
Within two hours we were under way.
The Bay of Biscay lived up to her reputation and we had a long, wet windy passage. No one on board had sailed a catamaran before. This first passage was a beat for four long days. The incredible pounding and jerking motions a cat makes on a beat, along with the terrific crashing sounds wore on us all. By nightfall of the first day three of the crew, including this blogger were sick. Day two brought a respite so Mosheko got his fishing lines out and Noam cooked baked chicken and potatoes for dinner. When I came out early for my night watch, I found Mosheko and Ilia with huge grins on their faces blasting Dire Straits from the stereo. During the night dolphins joined us. Throughout this passage we saw many dolphins but that night they were spectacularly beautiful streaming phosphorescence from their tales.

Then the weather took a turn for the worse. By day three we all looked a sorry sight - wet, cold and exhausted. On July 14, my log entry says it all:
Very rough. High seas. Wind blowing spume off of tops of waves. Taking lots of green water over the bow. Very wet on the fly bridge. Autohelm has stopped working. Steering by hand under engine.
Adding a devilish twist the autohelm had broken during the day and Manny wasn't able to effect a repair at sea. All night long, the crew hand steered in driving rain.

It is here that I must give credit to Boris and Ilia. Newcomers to the game, they had a harsh initiation and the morning of day four Boris gently asked Manny if there was a safe harbour nearby. I had prepared myself in advance with several options along this coast just in case and quickly suggested La Coruna, Spain.
On July fifteenth, Ellen motored into La Coruna and tied up at Darsena de la Marina. It is always a surprise to come in to calm waters from rough seas. As one closes the shore the boats movement becomes enjoyable, the sun peaks out of the clouds and up ahead one sees the marina and all the shore side amenities beckoning. This day was no exception. We were a tired and wet crew. We had only started on our journey, but the Bay of Biscay was behind us and we were satisfied with our progress.
Over the next few days we would have repairs to make, some fresh stores to buy and laundry to do. For now the old city of La Coruna beckoned. We had a new town and a new country to explore.
