Mountain walk

We took the mountain train from Ajaccio which was quite an experience. As the train slowly climbed through the mountains the view was magnificent, but we were also able to see large areas that had been destroyed by the forest fires.

Aerial view of the marina at Bonifacio - probably our favourite place in Corsica.

A couple of days stop over

04 August 2009 | Castelnaubray
Tina/Approx 35ºc (hot)
We are in Castelnaubray - famous for its Cassoulet. We've just eaten "take-away" Cassoulet, can you believe. You order it before 5pm and they deliver it hot to your boat in an earthenware pot in the evening. It was very nice - contained local specialist sausage with the beans, and also some other meat. We weren't sure what but think it could be horse (cheval). Have to say very good though!

Here for a couple of days to fill up with water and explore the sights. It is surprising the number of English people who have beautiful Peniches (barges) on the Canal and use them as retirement/holiday homes. Lots are brightly painted with brass buckets of flowers on deck and oak reclining chairs. Very upmarket! Others are like museum pieces.

Jon tells me today that he wouldn't do the Canals again (not sure if he's referring to the general water-way experience or the crew - hope its the former). Think he's concerned about our precious boat especially given the calibre of the people who hire boats on the canal. We scrambled on deck in pyjamas this morning to find out what the commotion was outside only to find some Spaniards on a hire boat who couldn't turn it round in a 45 metre gap! They were revving the engine for about 20 minutes and didn't seemed to realise that they had to turn the steering wheel at the same time. It was hilarious but at the same time a bit worrying that these people can actually hire a boat without any training. Needless to say we have loads of fenders out and a long pole to push the incompetents away from us!

The local shops are good. We found a Spar which sells bottles of wine ranging from '1 to '126 (the latter being locked in a secure fridge). We opted for the cheap stuff - nice though.

Niamh and I found a great outdoor swimming pool today. It was the size of an Olympic pool and ice cold - just what we needed. We've decided that we are going to record all the pools we visit during the year on the blog and rate them from 1 to 10 (10 being the best). Niamh gave this one a 7 - not bad.

Whilst we were swimming Jon kayaked 12 kilometres along the canal - nothing exciting occurred en route other than he was exhausted when he got back!

Relatives joining us on Saturday at Carcassone (Melinda and Simon). Can't wait to see them and share some good times.

Off tomorrow...not sure where yet.
