What Survives!

The Twisted Trees are lone survivors out here. Do they ever rot, someday maybe. They are fascinating the way they get twisted up from the wind.

The Seclusion

We found some!!! Seclusion that is. So far my experience in the Canyonlands has been different than I expected. The vastness, the beauty, that's all been inline with what I thought but I was expecting to be off more in the wilderness, away from the people. Even though the park is pretty unknown in the [...]

The Confluence

The Historic Point of destination today led us to the Confluence where the Green river from and the Colorado river from Colorado meet in the center of the Canyonlands and join to be the Colorado river which runs through the Grand Canyon in Arizona. This ten mile round trip hike was said to be over flat [...]

The Hoodoos

The majority of the Needles area of the park is covered in rock formations called the Hoodoos, An overview here shows these mushroom looking structures. The needles are condensed in one dense section but the Hoodoos sprawl out to cover the rest of the Needles section of the park.

Mackinac island

Long before I ever heard of the famous sailboat race from Chicago to Mackinac island I had heard about Mackinac island and the fact that there were no cars or street lights there. I couldn't quite imagine it. I made it there two years ago when we did our first Chicago Mac race and found it enchanting. There really are no cars. Biking is the main source of transportation and fudge is the staple diet. The island is touristy but yet not. People really live here! The houses are very quaint with flower gardens surrounding them. Horse and Buggies are there to give you a tour of the island. You can hire a driver or be one yourself. The Grand hotel up the hill makes you feel like you have gone back in time. The grandeur of the front porch, the bell hops in uniform, the horse and buggies dropping guests off leave you wondering what year you are living in. The fudge is the best I have ever tasted although you do pay the price for that. Fudge stores display their fudge making talents for all the watch. The first time we were there we rented bikes and road around the whole island. This time we chose to walk and explore the wooded areas as well. The fort from days past comes complete with the boy scout flag ceremony each morning and night and cannons being fired at regular times throughout the day. The race ending here adds to the festive feeling the island offers. It is an especially wonderful experience coming in on your own boat!!!!
