What Survives!

The Twisted Trees are lone survivors out here. Do they ever rot, someday maybe. They are fascinating the way they get twisted up from the wind.

The Seclusion

We found some!!! Seclusion that is. So far my experience in the Canyonlands has been different than I expected. The vastness, the beauty, that's all been inline with what I thought but I was expecting to be off more in the wilderness, away from the people. Even though the park is pretty unknown in the [...]

The Confluence

The Historic Point of destination today led us to the Confluence where the Green river from and the Colorado river from Colorado meet in the center of the Canyonlands and join to be the Colorado river which runs through the Grand Canyon in Arizona. This ten mile round trip hike was said to be over flat [...]

The Hoodoos

The majority of the Needles area of the park is covered in rock formations called the Hoodoos, An overview here shows these mushroom looking structures. The needles are condensed in one dense section but the Hoodoos sprawl out to cover the rest of the Needles section of the park.

Cooking

Through the years I have taken on new interests one at a time, things I thought I would never be able to do like gardening, drawing, remodeling my home. It's been fun to go into new territory and see where my talents lie. One such area though has not been my thing, ask my children and they will quickly reply; cooking. Smells of burnt cookies, dry roasts and mushy vegetables have been seen when attempts are made to cook or bake. It was soon brought to my attention that this was not going to work for the cruising life style. Here people put a lot of time and thought into how they can make gourmet meals in their galley and they love to share with one another having potluck dinners on each others boats. Panic, can I bring peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? Maybe if I put a paper bag over my head. So it is time to refine my skills and learn a little bit more in the kitchen. We have a two burner stove and an oven as well as a BBQ grill hanging off the back of the boat. I should be able to figure this out. The good thing is there is time to practice, a luxury that did not exist at home. One can be down below on a good day cooking to pass the hours on long days of sailing. Working nights most of my life saw my children making their own dinners, maybe in my second life I can cook for grandchildren? Well here is a first attempt at a meal that was pretty tasty, a grilled Talapia, Quinoa and corn.
